Metamate™ is a playful optional extension of pedagogical chess pieces. It's two pieces called Metas, trains calculation and creativity faculties of players in games where all learned theory become useless.
In Greek, “meta” means “beyond” or “along with.”
Metamate™ embodies both—expanding beyond chess while staying true to its essence.
Which chess player are you?
-
You’ve never played chess, but something about it draws you in. You watch from afar, observing others move the pieces, never quite daring to touch the board. The object fascinates you — it evokes a world both beautiful and closed.
Curiosity is already a form of play. Metamate™ doesn’t ask you to learn — only to dare. Dare to move a piece and see what happens. The board becomes a space to explore, where even hesitation can create a unique situation. No plan, just surprise — sometimes, a beautiful one.
-
You know a couple of moves — maybe the knight, maybe the rook — but you’ve never really played. You’ve seen the rules, the pieces, the squares… but never started a true game. You’re standing right before your very first real move.
Even a little knowledge is enough to trigger choices. Metamate™ makes space for improvisation. A piece behaves differently, a pattern breaks, and suddenly, a moment of play emerges. It’s the perfect space for creativity to come before mastery.
-
You’ve tried it. One or two games, no more. You followed the rules, played a few moves — maybe you won, maybe you lost — but it didn’t quite grab you. The game brushed against you without ever pulling you in.
Sometimes all it takes is a grain of sand to set the game in motion. Metamate™ adds just enough twist to create a story. An unexpected ambush, a wild trajectory — and the board transforms. It’s no longer a system to follow, but a space to reinvent.
-
You played as a child, or sometime long ago. You remember a few shapes — a king, a rook, a forbidden move. But the rules have faded. What remains is a vague memory and a curiosity searching for a new path.
The game may be blurry, but it’s not lost. Metamate™ lets you return without having to relearn. You won’t find the same game — you’ll discover a new way for the pieces to come alive: open, expressive, aligned with your way of creating. And you’ll feel your moves taking shape again.
-
You play now and then, without pressure. You often lose, sometimes win, but mostly, you enjoy the moment. The game amuses you more than it drives you to improve. It’s not a competition — just light, occasional fun.
The goal isn’t to win, but to spark a moment that surprises you. A slightly absurd idea, a clumsy move — and suddenly the game takes a new turn. Metamate™ celebrates those raw moments when creativity comes before logic.
-
You play with people close to you — with kids, with friends, maybe on holiday. The game is there to create connection, to laugh, to spend time differently. You’re not trying to beat someone, but to share something around the board.
Metamate™ gives everyone a chance to play in their own way. The pieces become tools for imagining together, laughing at strange moves, or trying wild actions. You create situations no plan could foresee — and that’s what makes the game memorable.
-
You play often — online, through apps, or face to face. You have your bearings, your favorite openings, your go-to games. You play for enjoyment, not to climb any ladder.
When games start to feel the same, surprise is what’s missing. Metamate™ shakes up your patterns and brings freshness back to your flow. A piece disrupts the order, an improbable move sets a new rhythm. Joy returns when the game becomes creative again.
-
You’re passionate. You watch videos, test openings, follow your rating. You want to improve, to understand, to play better.
Metamate™ opens a side path — uncharted, unlisted. You already have the tools; here, you use them differently. Each piece becomes a lever to create an unexpected position, to build tension where none existed. It’s a new way to progress — by crafting stories no one saw coming.
-
You play in clubs, online, against other rated players. You review your games, look for mistakes. You play to improve, to climb.
Metamate™ pulls you out of well-trodden sequences. Here, the patterns blur, the logic shifts. A piece breaks your habits, and you have to improvise with what you’re given. This isn’t regression — it’s pure play, where adaptation and inventiveness take the lead.
-
You play a lot. You study your games, sharpen your instincts, know your lines — and your opponents’. You play with intensity.
You know how to read a position, to calculate, to anticipate. Metamate™ introduces the one element that escapes your grasp. The plan becomes hazy, an unexpected piece forces you out of the frame. And in that moment of imbalance, your strategic creativity becomes essential.
-
You know the history of the game, its legends and its great lines. You’ve studied, analyzed, reimagined. You can read a game before it’s even played.
In Metamate™, you enter a space without reference. The tools are there — but the codes are missing. You’re not replaying what you’ve studied; you’re inventing a new kind of game, where each move is part intuition, part disruption, part story. Here, creativity becomes a form of expertise.
-
You’re ranked, surrounded, trained. Maybe you teach. You live in rigor, in discipline, in the pursuit of perfection.
Metamate™ isn’t a test — it’s a lab. A tool for exploring unexpected lines, inventing new tensions, surprising your students or yourself. Creativity here becomes a tactical tool — but also a pedagogical one, free of predefined codes.
-
You are at the top. Precision is your daily craft, board vision your language. You are recognized, expected, respected.
Metamate™ doesn’t try to beat you — it tries to shift you. On uncertain ground, certainty won’t be enough. You’re invited to replay — not to win, but to see what happens when the plan disappears. Here, your creativity becomes the only system that matters.
